According to a recent Forbes article, researchers recently presented findings at a New Orleans based Society for Neuroscience meeting. The presentations indicted that stress can affect mental health. Research by Dipesh Chaudhury revealed that stressful events can promote depression, which can affect brain waves so that the brain does not react positively to activities that formerly induced a pleasurable brain response.

Additionally, the study also indicated that stress can promote the brain to release chemicals in the prefontal cortex that can adversely affect the ability to engage in higher level thinking. Studies suggest that ketamine, an anti-depressant drug, can reduce the effects of stress and additional research is underway.
